Skincare Routine for Men

Skincare to men is a topic that they don’t deem necessary or even worth their time. They usually take skincare to be a very feminine activity that should only be done by women. Despite this, a good number of men have gone ahead to develop a good skincare routine and are very confident about it.

Women (me included) have always joked a lot about how men will literally apply anything to their face at any time and not experience any breakouts after. Meanwhile, we have a whole skincare routine but these pimples can’t give us a damn break. This has actually been studied and many reasons have been provided to support the argument that men have a different skin compared to women. Men’s skin is less sensitive than that of women therefore allowing them to withstand any foreign products and harsh environments. Research has also shown that men’s skin has more collagen and elastin therefore making their skin firm and thick as well. This also means that aging in men’s skin appears much later as compared to women’s skin.

So, is skincare really necessary for men? The answer is yes. The skin has a very important role in protection of our bodies therefore it needs to be well taken care of. You can take it as an investment in your health and self-confidence as well because a good skincare routine will help you prevent wrinkles, acne and even sun damage.

With all that being said, an effective skincare routine is more than just washing your face with whatever soap you have lying around then hope for the best. Building a good skincare routine thpugh takes only a few simple steps and you can build one by yourself easily at home. That is why here in this article we take you through some of the few steps to follow when building an effective skincare routine.

Step 1: Cleanse

Cleansing is very necessary to get rid of the excess oil, sweat and dirt accumulated throughout the day. Ensure you use a specific facial cleanser that is designed for your skin type. Try to cleanse your face in the morning and in the evening for even better results.

Step 2: Moisturize

A good moisturizer will help your skin by maintaining moisture and keeping it from drying. Look for a moisturizer that is lightweight and ensure that it is formulated to provide maximum benefit for or skin type.

Step 3: Sunscreen (SPF)

Sunscreen is very important regardless of your skin tone. When UV rays come into direct contact with our skin, they can not only cause skin cancer, but also contribute in aging of the skin. Look for an SPF that is 30+ and apply it daily to provide maximum protection to your skin.

These three steps are usually good to go but with time, you can also incorporate these other steps to achieve even better results;

  1. Exfoliation

Exfoliation helps get rid of dead skin cells that accumulate in the skin and clog pores therefore causing acne. It should be done at least twice every week after cleansing and before applying all the other products. Be careful not to over-exfoliate as this can be too harsh on your skin and strip away the natural oils.

  1. Mask

Masks act like supplements to our normal skincare routines and tend to target more specific skin concerns. The best type of mask especially for men is the clay mask as it will cleanse deep into your skin and remove built up dirt and excess oils. You can mask once or twice every week.

  1. Serum

I know most people think serums and moisturizers have the same functions but that is just half true. Serums are actually more effective compared to moisturizers as they have active ingredients that benefit the skin quickly. This though does not mean you replace your moisturizer with a serum becasue it still performs other functions such as sealing in the moisture and serum as well. In addition, just as every other product, ensure you get a serum that is best suitable for your skin type and solves your skin concerns.
