It’s no secret that micro-link extensions have gained so much popularity and become a go-to alternative to wigs and the traditional weaves. The versatility in terms of styling, undetectable install and the ability to last up to three times longer than other weaving techniques is just unmatched.

When it comes to micro-links, regardless of how well the hair extensions are attached or how high the level of hair quality is, proper care and maintenance is still needed to make sure the hair can last five months and beyond. This type of hair extension is quite expensive so you don’t really need that much motivation to properly take care of it, if you get what I’m saying lol.

We have compiled a few tips and tricks to help you in your micro-link journey so read on.

  1. Wash your hair extensions in the shower

Washing your micro-link extensions is not as complicated and does not require any inconvenient or tedious hair care. First, comb out your hair with a wide-toothed comb to undo any tangles before wetting your hair. While in the shower, make sure your hair is falling on your back behind your shoulders and ears then gently run water through it. Also make sure the pressure of the water is not too intense as this might pull out some the strands of the extension.

To wash, apply shampoo and gently massage it into the hair in vertical rotation from front to back. You can follow this with a high quality conditioner to preserve the quality of the extensions. Also try to avoid applying the conditioner deep in the roots and be sure to rinse the hair well.

  1. Brush the extensions regularly

Your hair and micro-link extensions need to be brushed regularly to avoid any tangles in the hair. When combing out your hair extensions, firmly grab the roots of your hair with one hand and comb the remaining hair with the other hand. Do this starting from the ends just as you would with natural hair. Holding the extensions by the roots will ensure you don’t pull out the extensions when detangling any matted ends.

  1. Styling the extensions

Micro-links are actually extremely versatile in styling. From ponytails to half up half downs to middle and side parts, wow! This is due to the fact that you can easily locate your scalp in this style since it is done in sections. Styling micro-links is quite easy, you just need to ensure that you do not comb too deeply into the links. Be gentle and use a wide-toothed comb to undo any tangles. As you’re combing try to avoid hitting the links as this might loosen or damage them. And in case of any damage visit your stylist for reinstallation.

  1. Avoiding damage to the hair extensions

Since we want the style to last for as long as long as possible, avoiding certain activities might be quite helpful for this. Constantly tying your hair into a tight ponytail can damage both your natural hair and the micro-link extensions. This is because the tightening might result in breakage and weakening of the micro-link joints. You should also avoid use of anti-dandruff shampoos or hot oils when using the micro-link extensions as these can also damage the joints.

  1. Staying away from pools

Just like with natural hair, chlorinated water can also cause damage to the micro-link extensions. Therefore try to stay away from swimming pool water. Instead, keep your hair out of water by tying it into a high ponytail and cover with a swimming cap. Also do this with a shower cap when bathing. In case this is not possible then ensure you do not spend a lot of time under water and rinse the hair immediately to remove all traces of chlorine. This is because chlorine can damage cuticle layers of the hair extensions as well as the natural hair strands and cause them to become matted and dried out.
