Unlike the old days, the new times and technology has brought about diversity in terms of innovative ways to add extension to real hair. We have tape-in extensions, lace front wigs, headband wigs, sew-ins, the list is really endless. And now we have micro-link extensions.
Micro-link extensions are the safest extension method that anyone can get as it is so comfortable, does not cause any tension or require harsh chemicals. They have become so trendy and dependable especially because of the fact they do not require the use of glue, braids or any weaving thread. Their popularity has also been contributed by how undetectable they are and how well they blend in with your natural hair. They are also super versatile and make it easy to achieve any look you want without any damage to your real hair.
There is really a lot more to micro-links than what meets the eye. From learning about the suitable length, to the proper hair care to keep your natural hair safe, it’s really a hand full. That is why we have summarized a few things to note before getting micro-link extensions and help you finally reach a decision on whether or not you are ready to have them done.
Who are micro-links best for?
I know you might think micro-links do not require any maintenance but if you’re not used to spending a fair amount of time caring for your own hair, this is probably not the style for you. This style will need you to commit to maintenance or coming to the salon regularly to make sure you’re getting your hair redone. Micro-links are suitable for any hair texture as long as your hair is long enough and your scalp is in good health. Pre-existing damaged hair will be weakened by the additional weight and pull of the beads.
Experts say one requires at least six inches of stretched out hair in order to install micro-links. But some stylists are okay with three inches and simply say if they can grab it they can do it. But the longer the hair the better since the length is recommended to help cover the beads. A pro tip is to consult your stylist before booking an appointment so they can confirm whether or not your natural hair is suitable for the style.
What to know about the installation process?
Installation process of micro-links vary based on the client’s needs, the desired length or even they desired volume. There are mainly two methods used; the weft method and the i-tip method. For the weft method the stylist takes a small section of the client’s hair, apply the beads and attach the weft to that.
The i-tip method on the other hand involves working with smaller pieces of hair but the process of attaching the beads is roughly same. In this method, the stylist will section the hair 20 to 30 strands each (depending on the volume the client desires) then slide it through the bead. Next, he/she will add the hair extension and clamp it all together with hair pliers. This process can take about two to three hours but for the extra volume clients it might take up to eight hours.
How often do you get micro-links reinstalled?
The frequency of the touch-up might vary but experts recommend clients to visit the salon at every four to six weeks. The touch-ups usually involve shampooing and readjusting the beads as needed and finally styling the hair. If the client requires a deeper treatment or a colour change then the style is taken down completely and reinstalled.
With straight or wavy textures, you can reuse your extensions for up to a year or even three. But with kinky and curly textures, the lifespan is shorter since some of the extensions are permed by the manufacturer so the curls and coils can fall out quicker. They should therefore be switched after around six months because by then the extension may not be usable.
How do you remove micro-links?
You should never leave your hair in micro-links for more than two months without reinstallation. This is because product and dirt will build up and you need to take out the extensions fully in order to thoroughly wash your hair. The takedown of micro-link extensions might get a little tricky therefore it is advisable to go back to your stylist or have a professional take them down for you. But here are a few tips to safely remove them at home.
To safely remove the extensions whether weft or i-tip method, you will need a takedown hair plier. The pliers are designed to pop the back open so it is no longer crimped and pressed into the hair. This is achieved by applying pressure on the bead until it pops back up into a round shape. Once the bead changes shape, hold the root of your hair before sliding out the extension from the bead. Working with the pliers might take some time to master but be careful because it might lead to damage if handled wrongly.
