Most people delay their makeup journey cause they believe that learning is difficult, let alone putting together a full makeup kit with several products. Makeup is expensive I won’t lie, especially if you want to get everything at once. But honestly speaking you only need a bunch of makeup products to build your kit as well as create a go-to everyday look. Then afterwards you can add a few more items as you get more creative and into trends.

In this article I’m going to tell you everything you need to know to get started with makeup. I will also take you through a list of the basic products a beginner or an expert need in their makeup kit including how and when to use them. So let’s get right into it,

  1. Skincare products

The secret to a flawless makeup is a good base and a good base includes a great skincare. For a good skincare you need to first wash your face with a gentle cleanser then follow with a lightweight moisturizer. Moisturizer helps hydrate the skin therefore necessary for all skin types. Finally finish off with a good sunscreen of spf of 15 and above to protect you from sun damage and hyperpigmentation.

  1. Primer

A girl’s only wish is for her makeup to stay the whole day. The best way to ensure this is by applying a primer. Not only does it create a smooth and flawless base but also makes foundation application a lot easier. The type of primer to get depends on your skin type. For oily skin a lightweight mattifying and oil-free primer works well while for dry skin a hydrating primer works best.

  1. Foundation

When buying a foundation there are a few things you will need to consider. These include but not limited to, the type of coverage you want, your skin type and your skin tone. If it is your first tie wearing a foundation it is very important to shade match your foundation before buying. You can it this by applying a small amount at the bridge of your neck and chest to see if it’s perfectly blends into your skin. You could also visit a makeup store and have a professional makeup artist do this for you.

Also make sure you look for a lightweight formula with seamless application. You could either get a full coverage foundation or a medium coverage foundation depending on the type of glam you want to achieve. A tip is to apply your foundation with a dump beauty sponge for a flawless results.

  1. Concealer

A concealer is one of the most versatile makeup products in a kit. It has so many uses from highlighting to hiding blemishes to contouring to priming your eyelids. For my fellow queens with dark under eyes concealer should be your best friend. Concealer can be liquid, cream or stick all with different coverage therefore go for one that offers solution to your problem. As for the shade, use a concealer that is at least two shades lighter than your skin tone on your under eyes, eyelids and eyebrows.

  1. Bronzer and Blush

The secret to a chiseled face is a bronzer. It helps define your cheek bones and make you look snatched. A bronzer should be at least two shades darker than your skin tone. A blush also helps bring some colour and warmth back to your face since foundation washes all this away. A blush is usually the shades of pink from baby pink to hot pink depending on your desired results.

  1. Eyeshadow palette

As a beginner you are still trying to get the hang of things therefore an eyeshadow palette might not be that necessary. But in case you want to learn eye makeup it’s advisable to go for a nude/neutral palette. This palette should be full of browns, nudes as well as warm shimmers. This will give you ease when creating a day-to-day look as well help you in your practice.

  1. Eyeliner and Mascara

An eyeliner is also another essential which goes with any eye look that you go for. You could also just apply eyeliner without any eyeshadow and it would still look bomb. For beginners, a pen eyeliner is the most advisable since liquid and gel eyeliners require more expertise due to how messy they can be.

A mascara is also necessary especially when you’re still struggling with applying false lashes.  They will make your lashes pop and give you a simple sultry look.

  1. Eyebrow pencil

An eyebrow pencil will help especially if you have sparse brows. A black or brown pencil will help give an illusion of fluffy snatched brows which will make your overall makeup look good.

  1. Brushes and Beauty sponges

The way your makeup turns out depends a lot on the brushes and technique you use. As a beginner you definitely don’t need all the brushes in the world to achieve a flawless glam. You only need a few to start with. These include a foundation brush, a powder brush, a beauty sponge and a few eyeshadow brushes. Buying a brush set with these should be the best option especially financially.

  1. Lipstick

A good lip can totally take your makeup from 0-100 real quick. As a beginner you only need about three good lipsticks and you’re good to go. A nude lipstick for neutral looks, a red lipstick for full glam looks and a lip gloss for any look.

  1. Compact Powder

The final product is a pressed powder. A powder will help to keep the shine from the cream products away. It will also help when you are in need of a quick touch up later on in the day. This should therefore stay in your bag so you can carry it everywhere.

With these tools you will be able to achieve a flawless everyday look as well as a full glam without stressing on which products to buy.
